NameMy ยท Guide
A display name and a username are different boxes. The username is the handle after the @. That is the one with the strict rules.
The username generator stays inside a set that all three apps accept. A handle is 4 to 20 characters. It starts with a letter. After that it can use letters, numbers, and underscores. No spaces. No periods. No double underscore. No leading number.
The apps allow a few more characters than NameMy does. If you edit a handle and add a period, you have to follow that app's period rules yourself.
The @ username is 2 to 24 characters. TikTok accepts letters, numbers, underscores, and periods, and it stores the name in lowercase. Periods cannot sit at the start or the end, and two periods in a row are rejected. Spaces, hyphens, and emoji are rejected in the username.
The display name is a separate field, up to 30 characters, and it can include spaces. People see the display name on the profile. The username is what the link uses. TikTok also limits how often you can change the username, about once every 30 days, so check the spelling before you save it.
Instagram's signup form accepts a username up to 30 characters made of letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. It stores the name in lowercase, so capitals do not make a second account. A period cannot be first or last, and two periods cannot sit next to each other. Spaces and hyphens are rejected.
The name in bold on the profile is the display name. That one can have spaces and capitals. The username is still the @ handle, and it has to be unique. A name that just freed up can stay blocked for a while. The only sure test is saving it in the app.
New Discord usernames are 2 to 32 characters. Discord's own help page allows Latin letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. The name is forced to lowercase. Two periods in a row are not allowed. Other symbols are not allowed. The old name#0000 tag is not how new usernames work.
A display name on Discord can look different from the username. Friends may see the display name. The username is what you send when someone has to add you.
A handle can follow every character rule and still be taken. Open the signup or edit screen and let the app say if it is free. NameMy cannot see that. Read the handle as one string. If the letters run together into a different word, pick another before you are stuck with it.
