How to check a brand name

A name from the generator is a starting point. It is not a domain, a handle, or a trademark clearance.

Say it, then spell it

Read the name out loud to someone who has not seen it. Ask them to spell it back. If they land on a different word, you will spend years correcting it. The brand name generator keeps names to one, two, or three words, letters and spaces only, so they can be said in one breath. That does not mean the name is free.

Search the exact words

Put the full name in quotes in a normal web search. Look for a company, a product, or a creator already using it in your kind of work. Then search without quotes, in case people write it as one word. A crowded results page is a sign to pick another name, even when no lawyer is involved.

Domain and handle

Check the web address you would actually buy, including the ending you want, at a registrar you trust. A taken .com does not always kill a name, but you should know that before you print anything.

Then search the same idea as a username on the apps you will use. A two-word brand has a space. Most apps do not allow that space. Try the words run together, and try them with one underscore. The username rules explain what each app rejects. NameMy does not reserve the handle.

Trademark search

If you are in the United States, search the name in the USPTO trademark search. If you will sell in the European Union, search EUIPO eSearch as well. Look for the same words in a related kind of product, not only an exact match in an unrelated field.

A search is not a clearance, and this page is not legal advice. If you will file a trademark or sell under the name, ask a trademark lawyer before you spend money on it.
